Speech Therapy

What can I expect from therapy?
What happens if therapy isn’t indicated for my child at the time of Initial Assessment?

What can I expect from therapy?
If the Speech and Language Therapist recommends therapy for your child:
  • The aim(s), target(s) and likely time period of therapy is discussed with the parent/guardian
  • The aim(s) and target(s) are formalised in writing and copies sent to the School (provided permission is given to liaise directly with the child’s school). These aims and targets are individual to children and a Speech and Language Therapy Program is devised to address them.
  • During the therapy sessions, support is administered through play and games as well as worksheets to try and make the learning process fun, interesting and motivating. Pre-prepared material and activities are brought along to each therapy session. Copies of activities and ideas for games to be played with the child outside of therapy hours can be provided to parent/guardian
  • Feedback is given at the end of each therapy session

There is often more than one way to treat an area of speech and language difficulty. Evidenced-base practice is conducted at Language-for-Life and should a child not be responding to a particular method of treatment for any reason, an alternative treatment plan will be discussed with the parent/guardian and implemented with the agreement of the parent/guardian.

If therapy is not indicated for your child after the Initial Assessment, the Speech and Language may recommend a review of your child’s speech and language skills after an agreed period of time.

What happens if therapy isn’t indicated for my child at the time of Initial Assessment?
Sometimes the Speech and Language Therapist may recommend that one-to-one therapy is not required at that time. Alternatively the Therapist may recommend:
  • a Home Program for parents/guardians to work through activities with the child at home
  • a review of your child’s speech and language skills after an agreed time period
